Tamilnadu Mutton Curry

Simple, yet delicious, Tamilnadu Mutton Curry is just easy to cook. This is my go-to recipe when I want to cook a non-vegetarian meal for my family. Mutton Curry is delicious served with plain rice or chappathi, a salad and Raita.

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 30 - 40 minutes
Total Time: 40 - 50 minutes
Yield: Serve 4-5 people with 1kg of mutton

Ingredients

  1. mutton - 1 kg
  2. water - as required
  3. salt to taste

For grinding

  1. oil - 2 tsp
  2. cashews - 10 to 15
  3. black pepper - 1/2 tsp
  4. cinnamon - few
  5. cloves - few
  6. cardamom - 3
  7. fennel seed - 1 tsp
  8. cumin seed - 1 tsp
  9. garlic - 10 flakes
  10. small onion - 1 cup
  11. kashmiri chilli - 5 / 6
  12. curry leaves - few
  13. greated coconut - 1 cup
  14. coriander powder - 2 tsp
  15. ginger garlic paste - 1 tsp
  16. mint leaves - few (optional)
  17. tomotto - 1/2

For tempering

  1. oil - as required
  2. Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
  3. curryleaves
  4. garlic
  5. nutmeg
  6. tomatto
  7. onion
  8. corainder leaves

Method

  • Heat 2tsp of oil in a heavy bottomed pan, when the oil is hot, add cashews,black pepper,cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, fennel seed and cumin seed and saute it for 2mins.
  • add garlic, small onion, red chilli, curry leaves and saute it for another 2 more min
  • continue roasting and then add grated coconut, coriander powder and ginger garlic paste.
  • keep sauting for few more min, now add mint leaves it gives nice aroma for r curry and finally add half tomotto in the mixture .
  • transfer the ingredients into the mixi jar and grind till it become a fine paste.
  • pour 2 tsp of olive oil into the pressure cooker and when its hot put ingredients listed under 'For tempering'.
  • Add the washed mutton pieces and stir till mutton turns slightly pale on the outside - approximately 3 minutes.
  • now add grinded paste and mix well.
  • stir to fully coat the mutton pieces with the masala and season with salt to taste.
  • close the prseure cooker and when the steam starts coming out, put the cooker weight.
  • cook until u get 4 to 5 whistles.
  • mutton curry is ready now v can transfer into the bowl and garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve warm with hot Chapatis, Naans or plain boiled rice.

Tip:

Use a pressure cooker to cook Mutton Curry and it will be done in half the time it takes to cook in an open pot!

Note:

This is a spicy mutton preparation, so adjust the quantity of kashmiri chili according to your taste.
